Kathy Borchardt joined us today to share her extensive knowledge in neuropsychology. She shares her story from an educational and personal viewpoint while also covering the basics and common misconceptions within her field.

Things you will learn in this episode:

  • Neuropsychologist test the impact of the “physical brain and how that is affecting their functioning”.
  • Kathy is recommended by therapists or physicians who believe there may be a cognitive processing disorder such as ADHD, autism spectrum, or learning disability that is negatively impacting the child educationally or socially.
  • A typical neuropsychology evaluation lasts between four to six hours. After thorough testing covering intellectual, reading and writing, memory and many more, neuropsychologists are able to “look at the person as a whole”.
  • Findings and recommendations are crucial when communicating with the education system. There are legal components that must be included in the report in order for schools to comply.
  • Specifically with ADHD, there can be many factors that contribute. It most beneficial when different specialists work on different components in hopes for the same goal.
  • Despite what many people think there is no physical testing; testing is done through completing tasks. Another misconception is that these extensive tests can be costly, however, in most cases it is covered by insurance.
