An overweight, 61-year-old retiree, with zero hiking experience, decided to hike the entire 2,185.3 mile length of the Appalachian Trail in 2014. What could possibly go wrong? As his brother, Mike, commented, "It's a bit like taking up boxing and fighting Mike Tyson in your first bout." Join Steve and his guests as they discuss all aspects of the trail, from gear to Lyme Disease, then back to trail magic and injury.

Trigger and I have been separated and are now reunited. I definitely hike better with him! Vermont has been great training for our upcoming adventures in the Whites and beyond. In this episode, we also chat with a SOBO hiker, a “hidden” hostel owner, and discuss giardia with a young woman who plaited the SOBOer’s hair. Only on the Appalachian T ...…

This week we did our first ever Cultra LIVE at Connecticut Sports and Fitness in Glastonbury- yes that's right a LIVE studio audience sat in to listen and ask pointed questions about pooping in the woods, how to safely add more miles to get up off the Ottoman and up to that bigger distance (like the #HUNDO), what things can go wrong during an u ...…

Vermont has provided us with mud, mozzies, and views from the top of mountains. We’ve been hiking for 20 straight days and I took the decision to take a zero, splitting with Trigger for about four days. We’ll get back together on Sunday. Vermont has warmed us up for the adventures in New Hampshire and Maine, so I’m sure I’ll one day be grateful ...…

We’ve had visitors this week. One had a shirt for me while Trigger’s boys drove 16 hours to hike seven miles with us. The heat in New England has been stifling and certainly took a toll on us. However, the further north we go, the cooler the temperatures should be. No more immediate visitors so we have an opportunity to put in more good miles i ...…

Hey gang! We’re back with another installment of CULTRA, this time visited by Kate Gelato, ...er Gelineau. Kate comes to us from the OCR world and talks about her first open ultra that she spent teaming up with #hundojoe for 86+ miles at Forbidden Forest. We dive a little into her psyche and background and what it takes to go the distance. Kara ...…

She's baaaaack. Sort of. Halfway. At this year's Trail Days, we caught up with Juliana Chauncey aka Chaunce, who was roughly half way into her AT thru-hike. Still pushing on and now into Massachusetts and past 1550 miles. We’re managing our reduced mileage and taking several breaks during the day is helping us conserve our energy. I’ve now lost about 35 lbs while Trigger has dropped over 40 lbs.

Food. It's is a subject of endless fascination to just about everyone. Even the most experienced hikers stand room for improvement with their backcountry menus. Rarely do I go a long stint on trail without picking up some sort of tip for how to enhance my hiker fare. This episode will be appealing to those who want to improve their on trail cul ...…

Calendar Year Triple Crowner, and current Arizona Trail speed record holder, Jeff Garmire did not give himself the trail name Legend. It was bestowed upon him before he even finished a single long distance hike back in 2011. In the years and miles since, he's definitely grown into it. This show was recorded on May 1st, just a few days after Leg ...…

With two-thirds of the trail under our feet, the humidity and heat has cranked up to shorten our days. We still aim to finish in the last week of August, but we can see a tougher profile ahead. These past few days have been impacted by, particularly, the humidity and we’ve come to terms that those 20-milers are a thing of the past. That said, w ...…

Manitou's Revenge 54 mile run is one of the Nation's toughest races. Join the Cultra Crew as we talk with up and comer Tom Starodaj as he recalls the perils of this race and gives great Beta on Devils Path, in the Catskills. Oh yeah and Evil Becky named the Chicken Stacey, and Highlander hiked naked. OK so these are now pretty awkward show note ...…

This is a compilation of some recent calls to our 203-DOG-GENT Cultra Karaoke Line. Call and sing the song that is stuck in your head during your run. Other than that, unless you want singing lessons, that’s all there is in these notes…really. OK stop reading now. Either play the episode, or go for a run or both. Just don’t read these stupid sh ...…

I had a brief day of doubt this week as my body appeared to rebel about the miles I was doing. I soon got over it but even wondered if Lyme Disease was a possibility. I also got the great chance to meet face to face with our very own Dr Lynne, as well as her husband, Bob, and a listener, Eric Gross Jr. Rain slowed us a little last week but the ...…

Here’s that Run Ragged recap we promised- we’re visited by the one and only Joe Nuara, 3rd place finisher. Or 2nd to last DNF, whatever. We go deep inside Joe’s brain to see what it takes to go hour after hour after hour (29 to be exact) and what the heart of a warrior looks like- Joe gives us a really important “why” to the whole experience. We’ve been incredibly lucky with our management of rain so far but, as with all things, this, too, shall end. The rain is upon us and making the New York rocks slicker and far more dangerous. We have a quandary, in that there are blue-blazes to avoid the rocks but we want to stick with the white blazes as long as we possibly can. This purist st ...…

Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" is the book and/or movie that introduced so many of us to the Appalachian Trail that it seems almost silly for us to have taken this long to shake it down. Come hang with the gang and we spill this thing onto the floor, pick through the parts and decide what's too heavy, and what's too light. Listeners who su ...…

Old friends reunited and new friends met. The trail continues to provide us with serendipitous moments that are the real Trail Magic. Sharing the trail with Trigger, Dodger Dog, Cushy, and a new friend, Barb, has been a delight. I’m fulfilling my desire to watch the last round of each of the Major Golf Championships and zeroing for that purpose ...…

Pennsylvania has claimed another couple of victims; Trigger and I are VERY glad that it is over. Our feet and shoes have suffered from the sharpness of the rocks and, now that we have entered New Jersey, we were hoping that the rocks were going to improve. Our verdict so far; better but still rocky.

June Gear Contest Still Open Go back and check out Episode 41 (Virtual Campfire with Guthook) for details on how to win! Hey Cultra Nation! Bessic and Jara are in the studio to talk about the Worlds End 100k held on June 1st in Forksville, PA; and this one does not disappoint. Brian, Becky and Stacey all had little league games / graduations / life to attend to so they were reluctantly granted excused absences to take the night off and of course we still went ove ...…

Gear. For some people it's their favorite topic in the world, for others, it results in a shoulder shrug and an eye roll. But whether you love or hate gear talk, there's no way around it: what you carry on your back, plays a big role in how much you enjoy your hike. More precisely, getting it wrong the first time, can be emotionally and financi ...…

Rocks, rocks, and more rocks have made our days tougher but, somewhat perversely, longer and further. We’re taking a zero right now but have racked up an average of almost 20 miles a day for over a week. Two more days and we’ll be out of Pennsylvania and into New Jersey, state #8.

We are once again joined by Backpacker Radio's most invasive species, otherwise known as The Real Hiking Viking. We hear all about his two month long stint on the Jordan Trail. Just two days today, with a 35-mile hike into the precipitous descent into Port Clinton. Trigger and I are still together and, as you can see, he has reached for his bug net to keep the flies and mozzies at bay and away from his face. We meet a French Canadian hiker who is taking a novel journey back home and respond to an email from a listener ...…

Mike Dolan is a bad ass; lawyer, former boxer, West Point graduate, 2:45 marathoner, now 100+ mile finisher. Then for whatever reason he decides to accept our invitation to appear on CULTRA and goes and absolutely wrecks that stellar resume. Some people never learn. In all seriousness, we sit down with both Mike and our own Stacey Clark as they ...…

To prepare for a thru-hike is to spend months reading blog posts, watching videos, and following social media accounts trying to absorb as much information for your forthcoming journey as possible. But even the most type A person can't completely envision what lies ahead on the trail- and thank god for that. That is precisely the premise of tod ...…

We’ve had a productive few days, including the longest day I’ve ever done on the AT. Trigger and I are currently a 2-person “tramily” as Cushy and Dodger Dog are a day ahead. We’ve supported one another and kept each other honest as hikers. The miles are melting away and I’m speculating that I’ll finish earlier than I’d previously imagined.…

With the tramily now down to two of us, Trigger and I have made steady progress in Pennsylvania. The Mason Dixon Line, the halfway point, and the 1100 mile marker were all passed in quick succession. We’re hoping that Cushy will catch us in the next day or so and that Dodger Dog may slow down so that we can hike with her again. This week, witho ...…

OH SNAP! The Crew went deep this week on that *saucy* little magazine article about how we are parasites, ooooooh. But before that Art, Stacey and #hundojoe were buzzing with nervous energy in preparation for the #CUT112, while Becky's gigantic ankle was raring to go at the Cayuga Falls 50 and Jimmy further tries to impress his peers by trying ...…

Today's episode was not supposed to happen. At the beginning of the season, we outline the subjects in which we want our hikers to share with you. Today's show was not on that agenda. Reptar, Voldemort, Daniel, and Green Giant tell stories based on your questions: Hiking in crappy weather, meetups with randos, the coronation of Captain Underpants and more! The past three days have taken us through Maryland to the edge of Pennsylvania. It didn’t turn out to be the easy state I’d remembered. We were honored to have the company of Laurie Potteiger from ATC as our hiking companion for part of the first day and she was a charming and informative guide to all things AT. Another member of the class of 2 ...…

We’ve made it to Harpers Ferry, the traditional halfway point. I’m tired, sore, and feel accomplished. The tramily is starting to break up, a natural progression as members come and go. With a bit of luck, we’ll reform in a week or so. The good thing about the trail is that these things are fluid, with plenty of opportunities to meet new and ol ...…

We’ve finished with Shenandoah National Park. It turned out to be a great place that we all thoroughly enjoyed. With Ugh leaving for Trail Days, our little group has been augmented by the lovely Dodger Dog. Her youth and vitality have lifted our spirits. Listeners have continued to reach out and help us while old family friends prove that, as t ...…

Allyson "Clarity" Hester was a motorcycle racing grade school teacher before she broke her back. Now she's an Appalachian Trail Thru Hiker who inspires others, and continues to teach through her work as an ATC Ridge Runner, blogger, and is just an all around amazing person. Enjoy. Appalachian Trail Clarity Listeners who support the show have al ...…

I have no idea what this episode is about. I think Jordan is on it. Art was murmuring something about "getting this damn Skype thing to work" or some shit, I don't know. Becky and Jimmy couldn't make it because they had important family stuff to do. Anyway, Joe ran a hundo, hundo and a half (168 miles to be exact). Brian was there and no doubt ...…
