Jonathan and Fil from the The Pod Charles Cinecast - the official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jonathan’s choice Zodiac. Zodiac is the 2007 David Fincher drama based on the real-life Zodiac Killer that not only killed but also terrorised the San Francisco police and the Chronicle. James Vanderbilt’s fantastic screenplay is based on the 1986 non-fiction book of the same name by Robert Graysmith. It stars stars Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch, Chloë Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall and Dermot Mulroney. Ruffalo plays Inspector Dave (real-life Bullitt/Dirty Harry) Toschi as the main police investigator with Edwards’ Insp. Bill Armstrong and Gyllenhaal plays Graysmith, political cartoonist turned investigator and Downey Jr plays Paul Avery, crime reporter at the Chronicle. Spoiler, the Zodic Killer was never caught, Fincher’s Zodiac is meticulously faithful to the real-life murders and attacks but less of you usual whodunnit and more an exploration of obsession (Graysmith is a mix of Boy Scout and detective on the side) and character, both Toschi and Avery’s lives become consumed by the Zodiac. Character and ambiguity are favoured over action scenes and machismo. Scores

[supsystic-tables id=207] Despite the run time of two hours plus Zodiac still scores pretty highly across all categories and near the top of Flixwatcher and guests top Fincher films and scores a very impressive 4.49 overall.
