As you may know, we live in a world that is always saying that they need to "cut people off" or "weed out what's not serving them."

I believe that there is a great intention behind the advice, but do not necessarily agree with removing people from your life unless they are becoming destructive or endangering you.
A lot of people that do not find purpose in skill sets, activities, or anything that makes them feel fulfillment, find purpose in serving others.
