Moving is on the list of highest stressors – and not just for the logistical nightmare that can ensue.

Often there are a lot of emotions surrounding a change: marriage, divorce, new job, having to be near a place or people. And sometimes, we just stop and ask ourselves if we are truly happy where we live right now, even if making a move can be life changing.

Sara is on the cusp of moving. She still hasn’t figured out exactly where, but she had a realization that she’s moved a lot- five times just in California. Most importantly, she realized she’s never moved to a place she has chosen; it’s always been for someone else’s job or where they wanted to move.

This time, she is definitely going to choose consciously where she wants to be. With that comes deciding where to, then how to up and move from a place you have gotten used to and comfortable in. As Sara’s mom used to tell her, it’s really what you bring to the home, and you, Sara, always make the place you are home. All true, and Sara’s acclimated and gotten to love California and living by the beach, though she never wanted to move here. But now, she thinks she may be ready for mountains. She grew up in Wisconsin and lived 20 years in California. It may be time to be in the mountains she loves so much.

So with this potentially in front of her, she started to think about all the things that make us depressed, anxious, etc with moving.

She wants to flip that to excitement and looking to a new adventure. Here she shares some tips of things she’s figured out.

If it’s your choice to move, first you can make a list of what brings you joy, what keeps you grounded and see what/where comes up.

For everyone moving, by choice or necessity, here are some points to keep in mind:

Embrace the adventure of the move. You are about to make your circle wider and see and learn new things.

Get into a routine similar to what you had in your last place. If you ran every morning, do that as soon as you can in your new area.

Get to know your area. If you have kids, enroll them in things you can do together and both of you can meet new friends.

Stay connected with family and friends from where you left. At the same time, meet new people in your new area.

Acknowledge your emotions along the way. Feel what you feel. All feelings will shift and change at varying times.

And remember: Moving doesn’t have to suck. It can also be fun and exciting during and/or once you get to your new destination.
