What to do when you think your child has a developmental delay/disability?
Manage episode 410144598 series 2847235
Hayley is the heart behind Alee Disability Support Services, bringing a deep understanding and lived experience to support parents of children with a disability.
Hayley's youngest daughter Pippa was born with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome – a rare genetic condition which means Pippa has difficulty swallowing, floppy muscles, terrible sleep, intellectual delay and big feelings.
In June 2021, life became even more complicated when Hayley was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Facing major surgery, and at the same time, Pippa had just undergone surgery to place a feeding tube in her tummy and required extensive care.
Hayley sought assistance from National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), but the support she needed wasn’t readily available. In Hayley’s words, it felt like life was falling apart.
Then, someone said they could help. Even though support coordination wasn’t initially part of their NDIS plan, a support coordinator showed Hayley how to use Pippa’s plan more effectively and get the help they so desperately needed at the time.
In today's podcast episode, Hayley sheds light into navigating the NDIS and provides support for parents who have a child with a developmental delay or disability.
