More than 40 million people over age 12 are on antidepressants in the US. Yet there are concerns among many about the dangerous side effects and low effectiveness of these very powerful drugs. Frighteningly, doctors aren’t talking about it, and many prescribers may not even know about these side effects. One out of five prescriptions are prescribed off-label today, meaning that there is a very good chance the drug your doctor prescribed for you has not been approved for that particular use. So what does this mean? Bottom Line brought in Joe Graedon to discuss. In this edition of the Bottom Line Advocator Podcast, Joe Graedon, MS, pharmacologist and adjunct assistant professor in the division of practice advancement and clinical education at University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy at Chapel Hill and founder of The People’s Pharmacy [https://www.peoplespharmacy.com/] joins Bottom Line President Sarah Hiner to discuss the very real dark side of antidepressants that no one is talking about. Is there a depression disaster? (1:43 – 3:45) Growing repetitive depression events since onset of drugs (3:45 – 8:45) The measured effectiveness of antidepressant medications (8:45 – 11:30) The flawed logic in the chemistry behind antidepressants (11:30 – 14:00) Accepting the emotional pain of life’s challenges (14:00 – 16:41) The “accepted” side effects of antidepressants (anxiety, insomnia, sexual performance (16:41 – 16:30) Layered drugs to counteract the side effects— drugs on drugs (16:30 – 21:22) Suicide when taking antidepressants (21:22 – 23:27) Violent behavior when taking antidepressants (23:27 – 26:20) Drugs forcing our bodies into unnatural states (26:20 – 27:35) AntiDepressant Withdrawal Challenges (27:35 – 30:05) Strategy for discontinuing antidepressants (30:05 – 31:15) Beware inexperienced PCP prescribers (31:15 – 32:30) Rebalancing your body when moving off of antidepressants (32:30 – 35:00) Finding the right drug isn’t easy (35:00 – 37:38) Antidepressants being used for other disorders (37:78 – 38:55) How to decide what is right for you, including nondrug options (38:55 – To learn more about Joe Graedon and his work, visit https://www.peoplespharmacy.com.
