I sat down with Ashley Law, the founder of Speak Up Buttercup! Ashley is a public speaker and mental health advocate specializing in encouraging women to have self confidence through learning to love themselves the way they are RIGHT NOW! We dive into her story of competing at the highest level and being an NFL Cheerleader and then having to give it all up to handle her eating disorder that almost took her life.

Here’s what we dove into:

1:05 - Who is Ashley Law? 2:51 - What is my goal for The Good In Today Podcast? 5:07 - How did Ashley become the host for the Why Arizona Podcast, Season 2? 6:30 - Why does Ashley talk about hard things publicly? 10:06 - My background (Danny Hoefelmann) dealing with suicidal thoughts 11:04 - How a Facebook live changed my outlook and showed me that I can impact people. 12:25 - What happens when you’re open about your trials? 14:50 - How did I get out of my biggest depression funk? 16:30 - Why do we block out a lot of the moments of our hardest trials? 19:01 - How writing a book has helped Ashley see parts of her past in a new perspective. 21:40 - What causes eating disorders? 22:54 - How to identify an eating disorder? 26:05 - Having the “it could be worse” mentality 27:35 - Are you an optimist or a realist? How do you know? 31:32 - Why do people compete for who has the hardest life? 33:23 - How do you share hard things and not sound like you’re asking for sympathy? 34:49 - How do you keep yourself from becoming known for your problems? 36:57 - When should you tell your partner about your trials? 42:00 - How do you find the vocabulary to communicate better with your partner? 42:28 - How do you identify emotions and how to communicate them? 44:36 - How do you tell your partner that you just want them to listen, not solve your problem? 47:00 - Are you ever really “recovered” from an eating disorder? 50:50 - Why I disagree with the 12 Step Programs 53:05 - What are ways to focus on loving yourself? 57:00 - How to reframe thoughts into gratitude. 58:00 - Why you can’t make lasting change until you learn to love yourself the way you are, NOW! 58:45 - “You’re either growing or you’re dying. There ain’t no third direction.” - Big Tom Callahan 1:00:00 - How Ashley is dealing with infertility and feelings of things being unfair. 1:02:28 - What are daily habits that promote good mental health? 1:03:37 - How do you strengthen your self confidence? 1:05:12 - What does Ashley do daily to learn to have better mental health? 1:07:05 - Why I’m grateful for Ashley Law 1:09:22 - How listening to Nicki Minaj and Cardi B can change your life. ;)
