The setting is the bedroom of 17-year-old Casey Redmond. It is the day of her high school graduation. Casey has not told her mom that she has decided to move as far away from her humble beginnings as possible. As the scene opens, her mother Mattie, is laying her cap and gown across the bed, and wiping away tears. She speaks to Casey who is off stage. As the story unfolds, her mother begins to disassemble Casey’s perfectly made bed to highlight life lessons she hopes her daughter will receive.
