This month on the Habit Thrive Podcast, we are exploring how the principles of Ayurveda can help us navigate this month and the entire fall season.🍁

Today, on Episode #72, we are going to examine our relationship with our fall food🍽️ choices.

As the fall season brings in cooler temperatures🥶, dry air and less sunlight🌥️, we can often be left feeling fatigued, unbalanced or just “off.”🥴

That is why it is important to notice which foods may be contributing to those feelings and combating them with foods that are nourishing, grounding and balancing.😊

So what are some things we can do?🤔

I’m glad you asked!🥰

First, try adding more cooked, roasted and warm foods to your meals.

This could be as simple as replacing your morning glass of ice water with a cup of warm or hot lemon water.

You receive the same hydration benefits💦 but get the bonus of a warm, soothing feeling (plus some lemon to jumpstart the digestion😉).

Next, combat dryness with creamy and oily foods.

Think soups, stews🍲 and chili. Roasting veggies with oil or ghee. Oatmeal with your favorite toppings. A warm baguette with butter.

Ghee and oil are considered to be nourishing and warming, so they can help to balance the Vata dosha.

Treat yourself to something sweet.

Now, I don’t mean to chow down on a chocolate cake every day … sorry!😜

Instead, think sweet, nourishing foods.🤗

Milk, ghee and fruits like dates, grapes🍇 and figs are said to be particularly beneficial during Vata times and promote a sense of calm and stability.

And, finally, use grounding spices.

Cinnamon in your oatmeal. Cumin in a pot of chili. Ginger in your cup of tea.☕

Experiment with herbs and spices like nutmeg, allspice, cardamom and sage in your fall recipes.

These grounding spices help promote a sense of stability and calm in the fall🍂 season.

Play with these options one meal or dish at a time, and think outside the box:

  • Eating soups or stews for breakfast
  • Blending leftover roasted veggies into soups
  • Trying different herbal teas

Notice which tips make you feel more nourished and grounded this fall season, and explore the possibilities!🙌
