Why do you do what you do?

Doing the Words of Love podcast has not only helped me grow the substack community but has also helped me grow as a communicator, clinician, healer, and educator.

I like to think of today as the beginning of the podcast’s second season. It’s also what I hope will be the first installment of one-on-one coaching conversations as a monthly feature.

So I’ve invited medical student Christian Hemmerich onto the show. He is a The Art of No Conversations substack member, who not only was one of the first to join the community but remains one of its most active participants.

In this episode of Words of Love, you’ll learn about the pleasure principle framework we talk about within the substack community and how it can help you discover and develop your reason for doing what you choose to do. You’ll also hear about a similarity in how Christian and I both grew up, how we both decided to go into the medical field, and other interesting tangents.

6:16 - Christian Hemmerich gives a brief self-introduction

9:24 - Importance of receiving support for both men and women

12:42 - Why I decided to switch from engineering to the medical profession

16:45 - The big first step Christian just successfully took

20:39 - How to maintain steadfastness in what you choose to do

24:25 - Why Christian chose to pursue medicine

35:58 - The pleasure principle and using it to cultivate and develop your why

40:25 - How pain can serve as a gentle leader for you

48:47 - What Christian hopes for in his life for the next 10 years
