What happens when the weight of saving lives becomes too heavy to bear? Join us for a gripping conversation with Jim Lydon, a retired fire chief and one of the many voices in the upcoming book "Wounds to Wisdom Healing Through Veteran First Responder Narratives." Jim takes us from his childhood in Northern California, where he discovered his passion for firefighting through the Explorer Scout program, to his early start as a dispatcher at 16. Through Jim's heartfelt reflections, we understand the gravity of community service and the emotional strain of responding to emergencies involving friends and family. His story is a powerful testament to resilience and dedication amid personal challenges.
We'll explore the haunting impact of traumatic incidents on first responders, particularly a heartrending pediatric drowning case that stuck with Jim. He candidly shares his early reliance on self-medication and contrasts it with the structured support systems available today, such as peer support and professional counseling. Discover how mental health resources within firefighting organizations have evolved and the critical role of preparing new team members for the unimaginable. Jim offers insights into the importance of resilience, shaped by personal and family experiences, in overcoming adversity.

Jim Lydon spent 40 years in public service. His primary role was in the fire service, rising through the ranks to the position of fire chief in a city located in Northern California. He then had the opportunity to serve in the city manager's office as both an assistant city manager and city manager. Jim returned to the role of fire chief in a fire department in Southern California, where he finished his public service career. He now resides in San Diego with his wife and continues to serve, helping others grow as leaders through facilitation of a leadership development program, as well as personal coaching.
