In Episode 7 of Vision & Graft I'm talking to a director I have worked with on a number of occasions, Jack Howard. He describes himself as a 'director of things' and his work is certainly wide ranging. You can find links to some of his work that we discuss at the bottom of this pageJack currently hosts a podcast on Amazon Prime called the screen test, is one half of comedy duo Jack & Dean, hosts a podcast with film buff Mark Kermode and directs music videos and commercials amongst many other things. His multi faceted creative approach is great proof that a successful creative career can be very varied and that we need not stay in our lanes. It is inspiring to me to hear him speak. In this episode Jack tells the story of his career so far and how he started out in the early days of youtube. We then move onto talk about how being persistent and resilient has got Jack to where he is now and how he intends to maintain this mindset. We then discuss what is good cinematography in filmmaking and how having that approach and mentality can translate to other areas of work and life. Jack shares how important it is for him to foster great working relationships and what he looks for in potential collaborators as we reflect on the director-cinematographer relationship. Finally we look at what life lessons Jack has learned during covid as well as the biggest hurdle he has faced in his career so far.
