Can gratitude and grief go together? I recently celebrated my birthday and was so grateful for all the people that helped me celebrate and the great experiences I treated myself to.

I also experienced the grief of celebrating my first birthday since my mom passed away. One of the things she used to always do on my birthday was to always sing me happy birthday, even if it was just as part of a voicemail. She was always the only one to do that.

This year, I still got a birthday song recording. Actually I got two, from two different friends. This sparked both grief and gratitude. I realized that grief indicates that there was always something to be grateful for and that even though my mom is gone, what I was grateful for, the feeling of celebration from someone who cares about me, I still have. In fact, it's actually grown in ways.

Winter is giving way to spring. Whatever has happened has happened and something new is on the way. What do you want this new season and new year to have? What will you be grateful for a year from now and allow yourself to feel that now.
