So long as we are human, ego will be a part of us, that little voice in your head, disguised as you, judging, condemning and complaining. So realistically we cannot "get rid" of our ego. What we can do is introduce our authentic selves, the highest place within us. The part of us that just is, and is loving, kind, creative and has no judgment, no fear, no desire, it is simply enjoying and at peace. This may sound too good to be true, but this being is inside each and everyone one of us. Before we get into how you can awaken to your higher, authentic self. I'll quickly explain the ego as described by Wayne Dyer, with a few examples. Also, I must preface all of this with the fact that, ego, and the thoughts that accompany it, do not cause suffering in and of themselves. It's the attachment and identification to this ego that shuts us off from our true nature. Now ego is comprised of 6 components: I am what I do (my accomplishments, where I've traveled, etc.) I am what I have (my possessions, money, clothes, etc.) I am what others think of me (my reputation, needing acceptance, seeking good opinions, avoiding bad opinions.) I am separate from others (competition, loneliness, arguing, etc.) I am separate from what is missing in my life (my ideal relationship, career, money, etc.) I am separate from the universe (disconnected from the rest of this world, from the power that creates all things) This wouldn't be a bad list to identify with, but the biggest difficulty we face while identifying with all of this is that it will never be enough to satisfy you. You will always want more. I grew up, playing music from the age of 11, on dozens of stages, recording albums in big studio's, going on tour at age 16, I made everyone so proud. It felt amazing! You can imagine my worst ego identifications were my achievements, my talents and what others think of me. No matter how much praise I got, it never made me truly and deeply happy. I knew there was more. This is just one quick example, but think in your own life, everyone has times when they identify and attach to their ego. This leads us into the 2 steps I've jotted down for you to introduce your authentic self and find real inner peace and fulfillment. Eliminate all distractions. So many of us are too busy to realize there's an emptiness inside of us. We live in a time where human beings are stimulating their minds more than we ever thought possible. It's unnatural and therefore causes anxiety, stress, and depression. I turn my phone on airplane mode between the hours of 10pm and 10am. It allows me to have a clear mind, to really understand what is going on in my mind. I journal and meditate, and all of this helps me become aware of my ego. Don't get me wrong, it's terrifying, but without facing this part of ourselves we will be running from it forever, and eventually, all this will catch up to you. To which point many of us resort to drugs or some other behavior that doesn't serve us. Imagine trying to perform heart surgery on someone who is walking. Eliminate the distractions, sit with yourself, create a space where you can introduce your authentic self in the face of ego. "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." ― Blaise Pascal, Pensées Practice Meditation Meditation is dreadful sometimes, the ego wants nothing more than to seek means of temporary fulfillment, and when you sit quietly it is essentially torture. Many people will go to the extend to say "I don't have time" which to that I'd reply, have you got time to take a shit? Then I assume you have a few minutes each day to finally take command of your mind rather than being a slave to your ego. Here is a quick meditation that brings bliss into my life each time I practice this. Sit comfortably with your back straight. Pick a mantra to repeat mentally with every exhale. (I use the mantra "peace" but you can choose anything that resonates with you)
