“The pursuit is the purpose.” That’s the biggest takeaway from this week’s VulnerABILITY Podcast, Episode 9, which pushes back against the idea that you have to “find yourself” or know who you are by a certain moment, age, or time period.

Struck by the frustration of today’s society and the constant search for identity, me and Abe tackle identity head-on. In this episode, we share our perspectives on whether you should try to find yourself and whether there is a set definition or time when you know you’ve truly ‘found yourself.’ We also discuss how to combat insecurity, fear, and debilitating self-talk when it comes to feeling lost within your own skin.

Highlights From the Episode:

[3:00] “I don’t believe that we’ll ever get to a place of, ‘Oh, I found myself.'” …I don’t believe that goal is very real. I don’t believe that we’ll ever ‘get there.’ Because if we do, what’s the point of living?”

[8:00] “You’re in a constant state of change… that end game, that end identity… Is continuously postponed. It’s unreachable. It’s… just a figment of your imagination. Because you’re in a constant state of change.”

[8:15] “And because we are in a constant state of change… we constantly need to reidentify what our true self is.”

[19:15] “You never understand what it truly means to be in darkness unless you’ve experienced light, and vice versa. One needs the other.”

[21:40] “Try to find identity within your soul and what makes you passionate as opposed to clinging, so desperately, to people or to a position that could be temporary.”

[27:10] “If you don’t know where you are in your journey of identity or purpose, or even knowing what it means to be you, it’s okay. Because you still have so many experiences — regardless of your age — from the youngest person to the oldest person — you still have so much to grow from and rediscover about yourself.”

[37:40] “The pursuit is the purpose in itself… the pursuit, and the exploration, and all the ups and downs — that’s finding yourself. Not having this endpoint, but exploring and enjoying the whole entire scope.”

The Biggest Takeaway:

Instead of forever trying to find yourself, realize that who you are is always growing. You won’t be the same person you were yesterday or three months ago, and this is good. Honestly, maybe you’ll never discover your true self—because if you do, then what’s the point of life?

Again, the pursuit is the purpose.
