What is an eco-community? Is it for the like-minded and those who have similar goals? To serve a true spirit of community, it must be inclusive, we must learn to embrace those with different values, spiritual beliefs, and life goals. A true eco -community is one where we reach out to diverse interests and at the same time, share respect and kindness with each other. Citing the Panchayat practice of ancient Vedic tradition ~ we see how each village was responsible through its Panchayat, or committee of five elders, for maintaining the home ground in the forests within its own locality. A community is a safe non-judgmental space where the despairing, the disgruntled, the pure spirited, the disparaged, the disabled, the affluent, the poor, the ambitious, the creative, all co-exist in harmony with each other. In the Panchayat system, no village was complete without its corresponding mature woodlands, and animal husbandry. In the spirit of community, we never encroach or use more space than necessary. Everyone shares in the tending of groves for providing fruits, flowers, timber products, and shelter for grazing cows.
