The book HAWAII: The Sugar-Coated Fortress by Francine du Plessix Gray published in 1972 describes life in Hawaii in the early 1970s. She describes how outside forces and cultures led to the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893 continue to shape life in the tropical paradise.
Ms. Gray also reveals how the many different cultures - Hawaiian, American, Japanese, Chinese, Filippino, Samoan, and others have adapted to live in Hawaii as part of the United States.
