Discover the potential of holiday-themed exercise interventions in boosting physical activity during the lead-up to December 25th! Join us as we explore the findings of the 2022 pilot study on "Exercise Snacks: Bite-Sized Science," featuring Dr. Greg Biddle, Research Associate at the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and Leicester Diabetes Centre.
In this study, a Christmas-themed physical activity intervention known as "Active Advent" showed promise in increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary time among inactive adults. The study, conducted by Loughborough University, addressed the health risks associated with the holiday season, including physical inactivity and weight gain.
Key points from the study:
The Active Advent intervention included fun activities like "abdominal snowman" sit-ups and a "Christmas deliveries" walk.
Participants received daily emails with Christmas-themed physical activity ideas to complete throughout Advent.
Both intervention and control groups reported similar activity levels in the early weeks, but the intervention group increased their physical activity by week three.
Accelerometer data revealed that the intervention group engaged in more physical activity and spent less time being sedentary.
The majority of participants in the intervention group enjoyed and adhered to the program.
While the study generated modest behavior changes, it demonstrated the potential for public health campaigns to encourage physical activity during the festive season. Dr. Greg Biddle emphasized the public's interest in such interventions, highlighting the opportunity to promote a healthier and more active holiday season.
