On today’s episode of the Mindful Podcast, we had the pleasure of interviewing the esteemed Julie Mcbride, who holds a Ph.D. in education and disability studies and serves as the Director of Research and Development at The Steadfast Institute. Julie is a specialist in sex education, women's pornography use, and public policy and curriculum.
Julie sheds light on the often-overlooked issue of problematic pornography use (PPU). While porn addiction is not yet acknowledged as an actual addiction, Julie helps us comprehend the precise elements that would constitute someone being "addicted."
She explains what a healthy amount of porn consumption would look like and the neurochemical processes that occur when consuming porn, leading to a compulsive reliance on it.
Our guest also addresses the pervasive issue of children being exposed to pornography and how it can engender severe dependence as they mature, impacting their mental health and future relationships.
As an expert in women's pornography use, Julie highlights her focus in this area and how it distinguishes itself from men's use. She discusses the stigma surrounding individuals with PPU and how it creates a barrier to obtaining adequate assistance and treatment. Finally, Julie imparts some useful insights on how one can commence their journey toward overcoming problematic pornography use.
We hope you enjoyed this in-depth, thought-provoking episode of the Mindful Space podcast.
