Health Topic: Lyme disease

What is it?: A bacterial infection caused by black-legged ticks

Symptoms: Symptoms can be varied and complex and include physical and cognitive issues

Causes and Risk Factors: Black legged tick

Diagnosis and Treatment: Antibiotics and treating symptoms

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: As a manual osteopath, I am going to help address somatic dysfunctions, including cognitive function and the nervous system. I would constantly be asking questions about my patient’s symptoms and any change in symptoms and I would help them come to terms with Lyme disease mentally. As practitioners, we owe it to our patients to always sit in the learners seat. There are no experts on lyme, but lyme literate professionals that are constantly learning about this disease. Consider false negatives, and addressing lyme based on certain symptoms even if tests are negative. This can help outcomes.

THE TAKE AWAY:

I guess my question is, instead of fearing lyme and ticks, how can we be symbiotic with nature, to co-exist, and to protect ourselves, and the environment, in the meantime?
