This episode features our guest, Eric Christiansen, a documentarian and filmmaker, who is a trauma survivor having lost his home in the Painted Cave fire disaster in Santa Barbara. He shares with us about the resilience of the human spirit and helps others share their stories through film.
TOPICS COVERED:
- His journey starting with a calling and dream to be a filmmaker from age 8, to becoming a professional in the business as a teen, to when everything changed when he lost his home in a wildfire that ended one era and started a whole new one for him, through his battle with drugs and alcohol, to finally finding the answer to his early calling by becoming a documentarian to help himself and others share their stories of trauma
- How he finds healing on both sides of the camera
- When he noticed that everyone's stories had the same arc - from war veterans to sexual abuse to childhood trauma
- How healing trauma is a process and how you can get stuck in some areas of it
- Unmasking Hope (his new film) - tells the story of many different types of trauma through a diverse lens
- Why wearing masks helps survivors function through day to day living, but what happens when the mask overcomes who we are
- The common thru-line of each survivor is when they find other people with similar stories and they realized they aren't alone
- Why healing skyrockets when you start helping others through trauma
- You cannot quantify your trauma and why it's important to validate everyone's experience so we can honor it
- How he is able to not be burdened by others' vulnerability
- Violence: are we numbing ourselves to it? Violence doesn't create a disconnect; it is the connect - the more we desensitize to it in entertainment
- "Hope doesn't come out of good times"
- Isolation is a killer - find your people/tribe
