In this episode I share a really dumb article ithat continues to perpetuate the myth that women who decide to grow their hair out gray might as well slit their wrists. Have a look and if you think it's stupid, tweet them at @smh. It's important that we start calling out lazy journalism that perpetuates lookism and agism. I also talk about things I'm learning like editing. You can check out the first vid I made - How To Love Your Wrinkles. I was also inspired by James Altucher and Steve Scott. In this episode we're going where many others fear to tread. Endings. Endings are a part of life that most of us have been taught to avoid but what I'm loving about midlife is that finally we have the maturity and wisdom to creatively and spiritually work with endings in a way that will help us live a healthier life. For this subject, I use the metaphor of sending our kids away to college - something that many midlife women are bracing for at this time of year, as the final year of high school draws to a close. The thing is, it doesn't matter whether you are going through this or not, all of us experience endings and I'm going to share with you five ways to look at an ending and turn it into a beginning. When was the last time you thanked someone for the impact they've had on your life? Many of us assume that those close to us or those who have a certain status in the world either know what they mean to us or have so much acknowledgement in their lives already that they don't need to know. And so the specific words remain unsaid. In this episode I share why I love to thank the people that have made a difference in my life and why doing so inspires me, in turn, to live a life that can serve others. In addition to talking about the profound influence my friend Judy has had on my entire life, I talk about Duncan Trussell, a spiritual comedian whose podcasts have influenced not only my work but have inspired me through many of the transitions going on at midlife. I was able to thank them both recently which was a great feeling. Find out more about Duncan Trussell My favorite Duncan Trussell Podcasts: Episode 52 Oh Hai Cancer! The beauty of life is that it's random. At anytime your life can be tracking along smoothly and then you get a call. Sometimes these "calls" are joyous and other times they absolutely suck and when we get to midlife, there's probably a chance you have experienced these brushes with extreme reality several times. In this week's episode - partly recorded in my car while I was driving - I share a few ways to cope with the unusual situations. I believe that they are my best shot at getting through these times in a healthy way, versus falling in a stressed out heap. I hope you enjoy it! One of the bittersweet aspects of being at midlife is that for all the amazing opportunities for growth, there are also times where we have no choice but to experience the sadness of loss. It is simply a fact of life which many of us long to avoid, but which can also be a profound and beautiful aspect of our life evolvement. In this weeks episode of The Change Guru I share my experience as my youngest daughter prepares to leave home in a couple days. Like many of today's midlife moms, my kids have left the nest, then have come back and then left again. Because I've been through this before, I've compiled a list of 5 ways to approach this unique form of separation in a healthy way. Even if you're not a parent, you can take these principles and apply to them to any loss you are facing.…

When you think about it, experiencing midlife is the stuff of great stories. It starts with that feeling that you can't do things the same way as you used to and the challenge of whether you're gonna do something about it or not! It features trial and error and gatekeepers and road blocks but it also, if you answer the call to adventure, has epic battles and mentors and a light at the end of the tunnel. This type of story telling was developed by the work of Joseph Campbell, an author, teacher and seeker who was the inspiration behind the phrase "Follow your bliss". Campbell believed in the power of mythology and created a structure for story telling called "The Hero's Journey". The super cool thing about "The Hero's Journey" is that it has a lot of adaptability to our stories at midlife and in this episode I share ways to consider how to make it work for you. It's a unique tool for looking at your current situation and any particular trials or challenges in a way that makes you the heroine, not the victim. By taking an observer stance and seeing your life following as a Hero's Journey, you learn to experience the beauty, drama and spiritual nature of this amazing transitional time in life. Enjoy! How would you feel if you left your mobile phone at home? What would happen if you didn't post on Facebook or check your newsfeed today? How many emails or texts have you sent today when you could've made a phone call? Since technology has come on the scene, none of us have been given guidelines for how to use it or what impact it has on our physical, spiritual, mental and social health. I'm noticing that lately, many people are talking about how technology is getting in the way of these things and rather than making life easier, it's tending to make us feel less than efficient, more stressed and overwhelmed. In this week's episode I explain how to identify technological overload, why some of the negative symptoms of too much plugged in time play havoc especially with women over 40 and give 13 ways to introduce some form of taking a break from the digital world into your life. You know that song that goes "You gotta pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again"? Well when it comes to living your life's purpose, no one ever told us that this could be a reoccuring theme. But it is and you must. In this week's episode I share a slice of my own experience with this when I had one of those days yesterday - a day, that in any other time in my life, I would've up and quit on myself. It was that bad. But I also remembered that this is all part of the ride of living your purpose. I think, if you're trying to live your purpose, but it feels like you're just banging your head against a wall, this ep might give you the courage to keep going. Are you a good girl? Do you say "yes" when you really mean "no"? Do you feel frustrated, trapped, ready to explode? If you answer yes to any of these questions, there's a good chance that the rules you've learned as a young child are colliding with change you want to make at midlife. In this week's episode, I explain how to recognize whether traditional and possibly dysfunctional rules are preventing you from moving forward and explain how to challenge these beliefs in functional and sustainable ways. Most of us women are very good at giving our time, energy and props to others but when it comes to accepting compliments, acknowledging our victories and all around relishing in success, we are excellent deflectors. Whether it's because we've been raised to not be "selfish" or because we don't believe in our self worth, it's sometimes easier to give appreciation and attention to everyone else rather than bask in our own accomplishments or worthiness. I got a taste of this recently when I received the print version of my first book. I felt a push to not enjoy the moment, to not share the news with friends, to not take a moment to say "Wow, I wrote a book!". Then I stopped for a second and thought, "What? Why is it tough to accept a compliment? Why do I want to push away a good moment." And those thoughts brought to mind the overall pushback we feel when the attention is on us. Welcome to the first episode of The Change Guru for 2014! Happy Year of The Horse - and speaking of years, how are your New Year's resolutions going? If you've fallen off the horse of the goals you've set - AWESOME! That's right - I said AWESOME! In this week's podcast I share why getting off track with your goals is actually a fantastic way to reach them. I learned this first hand last month while flashpacking through Asia. While everyone in the world seemed to be focusing on goals, I allowed myself to completely backslide on mine. See the pic? That's me off the horse (and on a table hula hooping) during a river tubing break in Vang Vieng, Laos. Falling off that horse was totally intentional for me. I needed to step away and review what was really important in all aspects of my life and rather than feel guilty about it, or beat myself up, I was able to get to a point where I wanted to get back in the saddle and start again. I was excited and focused. A lot of us have an "all or nothing" approach to our goals, as in, if we screw up or take a break from going after something we really want, it's over and done. But success in anything is not a linear path. It's hills and valley and side steps and all of them can have the same purpose, to help us move in the directions of our dreams If you're ready to stop feeling guilty about "falling off the horse" in any area of your life, you'll like this podcast.…

Whether you're in a relationship or not, being alone is something that all of us must come to terms with at some point in our lives, but rather than seeing it as a last resort, it's time for us to perceive this as a chance to come home to ourselves. It's exciting. It's terrifying. Many of us at midlife are facing the extraordinary circumstances at midlife of transitioning careers or getting into our own business for the first time ever. On this week's episode, I'm talking about one of the key things that can hold us back from making positive change at mid-life - our identity. Many of us think we have to label ourselves as a thing. We might think we're just a "job" or just a "parent" but the problem is, thinking we're "just those things" keeps us stuck and holds us back from exploring our true potential. In reality, we're the first generation of over 40 year olds who can challenge our roles and explore a multitude of new opportunities and identities. On this show, I share some ideas on how to embrace the idea of not knowing "who you are" and how this not knowing, can lead you on the adventure of your life. Like my podcast? A lot of us have heard of the "Empty Nest Syndrome" - the time when our kids finally leave home and we're told that we won't know what to do with ourselves. Without preparation this can be a confronting time but in this episode I share tips and approaches you can take during and even before you get to this stage so that you're the one who can spread your wings. When we hit our 40's, we're clear on what works - and what isn't cutting it. This can mean needing to say good-bye to certain behaviours, beliefs and even people who no longer serve us.. While saying good-bye can obviously have its pain, if these cords are cut with respect and honor, the lessons learned from them can form the most extraordinary pathway to a better future. In this episode, I share some simple, yet profound rituals for letting go of the old. And by the way, they include my recent experience with microdermabrasion (loved it!) because you might as well look damn good when you're shedding old stuff, right? If you've had to walk away from a situation that did not get closure or are ready to draw a line in the sand and want to have a plan to exit gracefully, this show will give you mindful tools to move forward, rather than be stuck in the past or in limbo-land. And PS - In the podcast I mention two videos that explain a ritual for letting go and loving yourself, unashamedly! One of our most common desires at mid-life is to work out exactly how we want the rest of our life to play out. This is the time when we ask the big questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What's my point? And the biggie: What's my purpose? On this podcast I'll be sharing stories, tips and techniques for getting clarity on what you're all about. Often, after a life time of serving other people (whether it's through being a full time mother or dedicating yourself to a career) it's often challenging to work out exactly what WE want to do. But when we remove the clutter from our lives - that's when we can see the glimmer of what are true essence is. And once we have that - it's all systems go. I look forward to sharing this podcast with you! On this week's episode of The Change Guru podcast, I'm shaking things up with a special co-host Lorane Gordon - inspirational speaker, radio host, coach and bringer of happiness. Lorane and I will be talking about one of the most crucial issues for women (and men) at mid-life and that is relationships. It's no secret that 60% of divorces happen for marriages at around the 50 years old mark. Why? Lorane and I will talk over some theories and share ways to get things back on track. I also mention the work of Dr. Stephen Johnson and you can find more about his research on what's important in marriage here. We'll also be talking about my current quest to take a break from caffeine for June, how I currently find myself feeling bored with my efforts but also energized as I know this is all part of the process. Practice. De Caffeine-ating. The Tony Awards and Getting Back into the Workforce After Being a Stay at Home Mom. That's what I'm talking about on today's episode of The Change Guru. At mid-life we're looking for stability in a what seems like a sea of crazy. And one of the simplest but most powerful ways to access an anchor of mindfullness is to have a practice. You don't have to do pretzel poses or sit in silence for hours to gain the benefits of practice. In fact, you probably are doing a practice every day but you're ignoring the possibility of the mindfullness that paying attention to it can give you. So- in this episode of The Change Guru I share my personal practice playlist and the bigger reasons behind them. From there - I share how the benefits of practice were highlighted big time by all the performers featured at this week's Tony Awards and then, I answer a question from a listener who wants advice for moving from stay at home mom into a career. You'll see, again, practice plays a part here! Enjoy! Sign up for my newsletter Like me on Facebook Follow me on Twitter Watch me on YouTube…

What does an inspirational speaker, coffee and Madonna have in common? In this episode of The Change Guru - they all have something to do with listening to your intuition. Starting off the show, I'm joined by inspirational speaker, coach and BlogTalkRadio host Lorane Gordon to talk about how to really get to the heart of 'soul whispers" - those feelings that call us from deep within. These gut feelings are especially at the surface during mid-life and our inner wisdom is there for us, if we'll just listen.... Lorane and I will share personal stories on how we trust our own instincts, how to examine whether what you're thinking will hold up under pressure, how to follow your nose when family or friends don't believe in your inner feelings, how to access these feelings if this is unfamiliar and more... After our chat I give you 3 tips for learning how to trust your gut. I then share a lesson learned from my gut reaction to Madonna's latest thing for leotard evening wear. And to cap things off I invite you to literaly take a coffee break with me - just for a month - which is something my intuition is saying I need to do. In this special Mother's Day episode of The Change Guru, I talk to Gina Fenton, a New York mother of four teenagers, who's best known to thousands around the world as "Extreme Mom". Gina uses social media as a way of sharing her personal experience through motherhood as well as supporting others. Her sharp wit, dead honest delivery and "in the trenches right their with you" style has gathered a huge and faithful following. Gina puts it like this: "Extreme Mom is a running commentary of the actual conversation taking place in my head. My thought bubble on speaker phone. The extreme label is by no means incidental. A fairly accurate description would be; matriarch extraordinaire of four teens, including a BONUS from God called ADHD, OCD, Aspergers, Bipolar and every-other-quirk not yet recognized in the DSM. Been there, done that. Proud member of the Parental Special Forces. That's like a Green Beret, but with more practical skills. My castle is always chaos. Blogging and making inappropriate jokes prevents me from face-planting, nose first, into the cuckoo's nest." I can't think of a better person to have us honor ourselves and our mothers this Mother's Day - You'll love meeting and be inspired by the unique perspective of "Extreme Mom".
