I'm very excited to share this conversation with Kenneth Starr, who served as solicitor general of the United States from 1989-1993. Though he's probably best known for leading the perjury investigation of president Bill Clinton from 1994-98, he may not be as well known for his lifelong work as a public servant and legal education leader. Currently, he serves on the boards of Christian Legal Society, Advocates International and Alliance Defending Freedom. Throughout his career, he has championed the cause of religious liberty and freedom of conscience for all persons.
We gathered mainly to discuss his book Religious Liberty in Crisis: Exercising Your Faith in an Age of Uncertainty, which is a very rich account of the constitutionally protected nature of religious practice in America (even though he himself is a practicing Christian, the book emphasizes the freedom available to all all religions, from Shamanic to Islamic).
The discussion spoke to my lifelong fascination with religion and belief systems as well as my more recent explorations of public service.
