It starts with that feeling that you can't do things the same way as you used to and the challenge of whether you're gonna do something about it or not! It features trial and error and gatekeepers and road blocks but it also, if you answer the call to adventure, has epic battles and mentors and a light at the end of the tunnel. This type of story telling was developed by the work of Joseph Campbell, an author, teacher and seeker who was the inspiration behind the phrase "Follow your bliss". Campbell believed in the power of mythology and created a structure for story telling called "The Hero's Journey". The super cool thing about "The Hero's Journey" is that it has a lot of adaptability to our stories at midlife and in this episode I share ways to consider how to make it work for you. It's a unique tool for looking at your current situation and any particular trials or challenges in a way that makes you the heroine, not the victim. By taking an observer stance and seeing your life following as a Hero's Journey, you learn to experience the beauty, drama and spiritual nature of this amazing transitional time in life. Enjoy! Whether it's because we've been raised to not be "selfish" or because we don't believe in our self worth, it's sometimes easier to give appreciation and attention to everyone else rather than bask in our own accomplishments or worthiness. I got a taste of this recently when I received the print version of my first book. I felt a push to not enjoy the moment, to not share the news with friends, to not take a moment to say "Wow, I wrote a book!". Then I stopped for a second and thought, "What? Why is it tough to accept a compliment? Why do I want to push away a good moment." And those thoughts brought to mind the overall pushback we feel when the attention is on us. If you've fallen off the horse of the goals you've set - AWESOME! That's right - I said AWESOME! In this week's podcast I share why getting off track with your goals is actually a fantastic way to reach them. I learned this first hand last month while flashpacking through Asia. While everyone in the world seemed to be focusing on goals, I allowed myself to completely backslide on mine. See the pic? That's me off the horse (and on a table hula hooping) during a river tubing break in Vang Vieng, Laos. Falling off that horse was totally intentional for me. I needed to step away and review what was really important in all aspects of my life and rather than feel guilty about it, or beat myself up, I was able to get to a point where I wanted to get back in the saddle and start again. I was excited and focused. A lot of us have an "all or nothing" approach to our goals, as in, if we screw up or take a break from going after something we really want, it's over and done. But success in anything is not a linear path.
