Military Sexual Trauma (MST) is not a clinical diagnosis. Still, it is an identifier that labels the circumstances a survivor incurred during their sexual assault or sexual harassment experienced by a military service member. It is defined as a physical assault of a sexual nature, a battery of a sexual nature, or sexual harassment.
Military Sexual Trauma can affect Veterans of all backgrounds; males, females, ages, gender identities, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. It can also affect Veterans serving on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.
If you're having difficulties related to MST, there are things you can do. Some people recover from MST without significant long-term challenges, while others may require professional support. Many therapies can help, such as ISTDP, EMDR, CBT, and DBT can greatly assist in recovery.
If you are a survivor of Military Sexual Trauma, please know that you are not alone. It takes courage to speak up and begin your healing journey. Most importantly, it is not your fault.
