Fasting boosts stem cells and new research out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shows that Age-related declines in stem cell function can be reversed by a 24-hour fast. The study was done on mice of all ages, but found that regardless of age, a 24 hour fast had a dramatic health benefit. They found evidence that fasting helps the intestinal cells repair themselves, something that is usually harder to do as we age. This may lead to new medications that mimic the fasting process for those who are unable to fast, such as diabetics.
