Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Donald Vega. He is a registered dietitian, strength and conditioning specialist, and lifestyle mentor based in Costa Rica with more than 24 years of experience in health education.

Dr. Vega, the founder of Kilosophy, was established with one vision: “reversing the metabolic disease through a fit, happy and healthy society.” They provide programs for overweight, diabetic, hypertensive, endurance and fitness patients.

Specializes in low carb, carnivore, and keto lifestyles and has been in nutritional ketosis since 2011. He has helped over 8,000 patients to improve their lives and lose over 176,000 pounds of extra fat through their interventions in the clinics.

In this episode, Dr. Donald Vega talks about getting involved in the health and nutrition space. After helping his mom reverse her type 2 diabetes, Dr. Vega found a passion for helping others on their journey to health. [01:45] Why Dr. Donald Vega Got Involved In The Health and Nutrition Space

  • Dr. Vega wanted to study medicine to be recognized. Eventually, he realized this would not be fulfilling.
  • Dr. Vega’s mom had type 2 diabetes. After studying nutrition, Dr. Vega advised his mom to eat fewer carbs and more fats.
  • After four months, his mom was able to reverse her type 2 diabetes.
  • Eventually, Dr. Vega started a service where he trained people three times a week at the gym and would explain what lifestyle changes his clients should pursue.
  • Dr. Vega doesn’t only teach his clients about diet and exercise; he teaches all about mindset, self-sabotage, and the subconscious mind.

[22:20] The First Key To Health Is Getting Sunlight At The Proper Time

  • The first key to health is sunlight.
  • You need to expose your skin to sunlight at the proper time.
  • Having sunshine between 10 am and 2 pm exposes your body to ultraviolet B rays.
  • These rays will help your body produce vitamin D.
  • Vitamin D is associated with better mood, and it will help with inflammation.
  • Depending on your skin type, you may need between two and thirty minutes.

[27:50] Another Key To Health Is Proper Sleep Hygiene

  • We are designed to work during the day and recover during the night.
  • Sadly, many people are working when they are supposed to be sleeping.
  • Also, we have unlimited access to streaming services that keep us awake when we should be sleeping.
  • When you’re not sleeping at night, you will not experience the benefits of anti-inflammatory properties during sleep.
  • All in all, the longer you can sleep, the better your body will be able to recover.

[30:15] Keys To Health: Electromagnetism and Spending Time Outside

  • Grounding will help your body attract electrons.
  • Put your bare feet out on the Earth.
  • Also, remember to take off your sunglasses to benefit from having light in your eyes.
  • Remember to spend time outside.
  • When you’re outside in the early morning hours, you’ll be exposed to blue light, which will help you generate dopamine, serotonin, and melatonin.
  • Melatonin is the most potent antioxidant for the mitochondria.

[34:00] A Key To Health: The Power of Your Thoughts and Negative Thinking

  • Everything that you create in the outer world, you first have to create in the inner world.

[45:00] Keys To Health: Drinking Enough Water and Breathing Through Your Nose

  • If you don’t have enough water in your system, you will experience constipation.
  • Also, if you don't drink enough water, your hunger centers in the brain might be activated.
  • When you are dehydrated, a pathway turns glucose into fructose. Eventually, it will turn into fat.
  • If you breathe through the nose, you activate the parasympathetic.
  • If you are stressed, your respiratory system immediately changes into chest breathing.
  • 85% of people are chest breathers; this will tell your body that you are under stress.

[49:50] Keys To Health: Exercising and Stress Management

  • Zone two exercises are great for metabolic health and fat-burning.
  • Stress management will help keep your glucose levels in check.
  • Mainstream news could be making you fat from the stress responses.
  • The bottom line is stress is not good if it is sustained throughout the day.
  • We grow because of stress. However, if you are not progressing, too much stress could be the issue.

[56:45] Keys To Health: Thermotherapy and Nutrition

  • Exposing yourself to the cold is anti-inflammatory.
  • Cold therapy can have the same benefits as exercise.
  • Dr. Vega teaches clients about clean keto.
  • He recommends eating shellfish, fish, eggs, fatty meats, and lean meats.
