Today, I am blessed to have Mary Ruddick here with me. Dubbed the "Sherlock Holmes of Health" for her unique ability to expeditiously assess and remediate rare neuromuscular conditions that others have deemed impossible, Mary Ruddick can regularly be found endangering herself in the untouched corners of the world to learn from and distill the wisdom from the last remaining traditional cultures. She shares her findings and knowledge via her sought after keynote speeches, 100+ podcast appearances, her published articles, and her work both in front and behind the camera.

In this episode, Mary argues that traditional diets, which universally include animal products, have supported excellent health in indigenous communities worldwide. She contrasts this with modern, often vegan, diets promoted in Western societies, which she associates with a rise in diseases. Mary highlights the historical mishandling of certain foods, such as corn, leading to widespread nutritional deficiencies like pellagra due to a lack of proper processing knowledge. She suggests that many modern health problems arise from nutritional misunderstandings and a failure to acknowledge the benefits of animal-based diets. Despite recognizing the temporary benefits of vegan diets, Mary warns that they lack the nutrients needed for health and rebuilding the body.

Tune in as Mary explains that H. pylori is a necessary bacterium that should ideally reside on the tips of the villi in a healthy gut, but damage to the microbiome and villi can cause it to migrate into cracks, leading to problems. She critiques current stool-based microbiome testing as limited, noting that while diverse diets correlate with healthier microbiomes, this relationship is oversimplified. Mary emphasizes the significant impact of lifestyle factors like light exposure and stress on the microbiome and highlights how other cultures have long integrated microbiome considerations into medical practices.
